Iphone Charging Issues
Apple has a reputation of urging customers not to use charging cables
other than the officially sanctioned, and coincidentally more expensive,
cables sold by Apple and authorized vendors. The new iOS 7 encourages
similar behavior by blocking support for unlicensed Lightning cables.
Multiple users have reported on Reddit last week that they are unable to
charge an iPhone 5 when plugging in an unlicensed Lightning cable. I
experienced the same problem yesterday after plugging in my iPhone 5 to a
friend's off-brand cable. Rather than charging the device, a warning
pops-up saying that "This cable or accessory is not certified and may
not work reliably with this iPhone."
While I was disappointed because I knew this would lead to problems (I
use a cheap Lightning cable for my car charger), I expected to find a
fix soon. 9to5Mac notes that a workaround has already been discovered.
It would be nice had Apple made things easier and just let people
continue to charge without needing to take extra steps, but here's how
to fix a Lightning cable not charging with iOS7.
1. Turn on USB power
2. Plug in lightning cable to iPhone
3. Dismiss any warnings
4. Unlock your iPhone.
5. Dismiss any remaining warnings.
6. Now with the screen turned on.
7. Unplug the knock off lightning cable.
8. Plug it back in.
9. Dismiss warning again
10. It should now charge.
